Dartmoor and Exmoor

There are three visitor centres at Princetown, Haytor and Postbridge. We fully agree with Steven Spielberg who remarked upon Dartmoor’s ‘abundance of natural beauty’, when filming the epic movie War Horse. Exmoor’s landscape is made up of coastal views, wooded valleys. Take a walk on the coastal path of the highest sea cliffs in England!

The Devon Coastline

Dine at some of Devon’s best country pubs and restaurants, and if you are here in August, Sidmouth’s famous folk week is well worth a visit. North Devon is famed for its surfing beaches. Take a trip to beautiful Croyde and Putsborough Sands with your surfboard – or for a great family beach, visit Woolacombe for the day. Many of North Devon’s beaches are award-winning. The coastline has heritage status and is designated an area of outstanding beauty. We agree!

Close to the cottage you will find two wonderful National Trust properties: the Victorian country house, Nightshayes Court, and the eighteenth century house at Killerton. The town of Tiverton also has a charming canal with one of the last horse-drawn barges in the UK. For the curious, visit Tiverton Castle and the Museum of Mid Devon Life. Just one mile down the lane from the cottage, is Bickleigh Mill, a historic water mill, café and gift shop. The Fisherman’s Cot, a picturesque thatched pub with beer garden, has a stunning setting on the side of the River Exe. We can recommend The Hartnoll Hotel in Bolham, Tiverton, for fine dining. The Swan at Bampton also has a great reputation.
